Fox, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29, used the Bruce Springsteen song “No Surrender” to describe his battle to find a cure for his progressive neurodegenerative disorder. “It’s like a personal anthem for me. Do not retreat, do not give up, ”said the actor, standing on the podium.

Presenting the award, Woody Harrelson said that Fox “turned a horrifying diagnosis into a bold mission” by launching the Michael J. Fox Project to find a cure. The foundation has raised over $1 billion for research. “Michael J. Fox sets the highest example of how to fight and live.”

After a few minutes of applause from the audience as he walked to the podium, Fox turned around and said, “You’re making me shiver.” Then he said, “I can’t believe I’ve been standing here for so long, it’s a miracle. I can’t walk with a figurine. But I ask my wife, Tracey, to bear this burden again.”

Diane Warren Honorary Award 43 years later

When it was her turn to take the podium to present an honorary Oscar to Diane Warren, Cher joked, “I’m the oldest here.” Warren previously held the record for most nominations (13) in a specific category: Best Song, but never won. Sher said that Warren is “the most prolific songwriter of my generation, of any generation.” “I’ve been waiting 43 years to say this… but I would like to thank the Academy,” Warren added.

Later in the ceremony, Jeff Bridges presented Weir with an honorary Oscar. The actor thanked Robin Williams for convincing him to work with an Australian director on Fearless for the first time since 1993. “Robin, you were right. Everything you said is right.” Weir, in turn, spoke of Williams, the star of his 1989 film Circle of the Lost Poets, who died in 2014: “Robin Williams, if I could bring him back for five minutes.” And he added that filming “is like a journey.”
