In a few months we will enter into an informal “Year of Maria Callas”, as it has been 100 years since the birth of the opera diva who adorned the largest opera houses, whose fame and voice are still considered unsurpassed. And while musical tributes, exhibitions and new lyric works are being prepared in Greece and abroad, from the other side of the Atlantic comes the news of the end – perhaps unwillingly – of the dedicated year.
Oscar Angelina Jolie will play Callas in the new film by Chilean Pablo Larain called “Maria”as announced a few days ago. The film follows the famous soprano’s turbulent life, her rise to the world’s great operas and the scandals that followed her personal life, and the script is written by Steven Knight, the talented creator of Peaky Blinders. “I take the responsibility of showcasing Calla’s life and legacy very seriously,” Jolie said. For the 46-year-old director, Maria comes after the masterpiece Spencer, which tells the story of Princess Diana, and six years after Jackie, Maria Callas’ rival. Later it will be interesting to compare how Laraine captured these two great personalities. As he stated, “the opportunity to combine the two arts that I have a passion for, film and opera, was a dream that I was waiting to come true.”
