France: ‘Emmanuela’ director dies

Zist Zeken, best known for directing the legendary Emmanuela erotic film series, passed away on Tuesday.

The death of the 82-year-old French director was announced to the French Agency (AFP) on Wednesday by the secretary of the director’s family.

“Gist Zeken, director of ‘Emmanuelle’ starring Sylvia Christel, died on September 6 in Brittany after a long illness at the age of 82,” he said. It is noted that the director died next to his wife and daughter.

Zeken was born in 1940 in the French city of Vichy. In addition to Emmanuela in 1974, he also made the successful Story of O in 1975, as well as Madame Claude (1977) and Private Collections (1979). He has also been called the “King” of soft sensual films.

“Emmanuela” was a worldwide success. However, according to the director’s entourage, she overshadowed and “hid” Zeken’s many-sided talent as a photographer and sculptor. He frequently exhibited his work at his own art gallery in Paris.
