The global smartphone market fell 18 percent last quarter, the biggest drop in its history, and ended 2022 with the lowest sales volume in nine years, according to data from IDC. In most markets, people change phones on average every three years and four months.
In the last three months of the year, the decrease was from 367 million pieces to 300 million. Xiaomi suffered the biggest drop, 26%, while Apple fell just 15%.
The last quarter is special because Apple outsells Samsung, given that the new iPhones are released in October. Apple sold 72 million phones, while Samsung sold 58 million. In the other three quarters, Samsung shipped 202 million phones, while Apple shipped 154 million.
Factors such as declining purchasing power, inflation and economic uncertainty have forced many to forgo more expensive purchases.
For the full year 2022, IDC data points to an 11% decline to 1.21 billion units, the lowest annual figure since 2013.
Samsung shipped 260 million phones, Apple finished with 226 million, and Xiaomi was third with 153 million. Oppo had 103 million and Vivo had 99 million units. Compared to 2021, shipments of Oppo and Vivo fell by 23%, and Xiaomi – by 20%. Samsung and Apple fell by only 4%.
