Philip Morris International: For a smoke-free future

Philip Morris International (PMI) is a leading international tobacco company committed to building a smoke-free future and expanding its long-term product portfolio beyond the tobacco and nicotine products sector. The company’s current product portfolio consists primarily of cigarettes and smokeless products, including non-heat products, oral nicotine products, or nicotine-containing products sold in markets outside the United States. Since 2008, PMI has invested more than $9 billion in the development, research and commercialization of innovative smokeless products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, with the goal of ending cigarette sales altogether. For this, world-class scientific evaluation capabilities were created, in particular, in the areas of preclinical systemic toxicology, clinical and behavioral studies, as well as post-marketing studies.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the PMI Platform 1 version of the IQOS device and associated consumables as a Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) and has determined that the modified exposure decision is appropriate for strengthening the health of the population.

As of September 30, 2022, smokeless products developed by PMI were available for sale in 70 markets (excluding Russia and Ukraine). PMI estimates that around 13.5 million adults worldwide have already switched to IQOS and quit smoking.

With a strong foundation and extensive experience in life sciences, in February 2021 PMI announced its ambition to expand into the wellness and healthcare space and provide innovative products and solutions aimed at meeting the needs of patients and consumers.
