The agreement, signed today (Saturday, no), is based on the interests of the four states related to the strengthening of national and regional energy security and communication in the Black Sea basin, diversification of supply sources, use of renewable energy production potential. in the Caspian region and increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy balance,” the Romanian energy minister said in a post on his Facebook page.

According to him, the document will provide the financial and technical basis for the implementation of the submarine cable project for the transport of electricity from renewable sources between Romania and Azerbaijan through Georgia and the Black Sea, and later for the transport of this energy to Hungary and the rest of Europe through the European transport system.

The submarine cable project for the transmission of electricity across the Black Sea is part of the agreements in the field of energy agreed between the European Union represented by the European Commission and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and at the same time it is the flagship project for Georgia within the EU Global Gateway strategy.

The agreement was signed in the presence of the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

“Furthermore, I want to thank my colleagues Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy, and Mikail Jabbarov, Minister of Economy from the Republic of Azerbaijan, for all the cooperation we have had on important energy projects, including the fact that our country will have Azerbaijani gas from January 2023. Romania is becoming an important hub in the energy market both in terms of electricity and natural gas. And together with our partners, we will develop investments in our country and thus ensure the energy security and independence of Romania and the region,” the Minister of Energy emphasized.
