Moldova’s pro-Western government complained on Friday that Gazprom was not behaving like a serious partner, given its refusal to tell Chisinau how much natural gas it will deliver in November, Reuters reported.
One of Europe’s poorest countries, Moldova, depends on Russian gas and has been hit hard by rising prices since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The contract between Moldova and Gazprom varies from one month to the next, depending on the spot price of gas and oil.
Vice Prime Minister Andrii Spinu said that he asked the head of Gazprom’s export department, Olena Burmistrov, how much gas Moldova will receive in November, and she replied: “We’ll see.”
Gazprom has already cut supplies in October by 30 percent and said it may cut off gas entirely if Moldova does not pay all its debts to the company.
“Gazprom says it is a serious partner, but serious partners do not behave the way they behave with Moldova,” Spinu told the online news service NewsMaker.
“I don’t understand the reasons for Gazprom to stop supplying gas. We have a contract and we are ready to pay for gas,” he said.
Moldova’s separatist region of Transnistria earlier announced emergency measures to limit gas consumption due to fears that Gazprom would cut supplies.
The leadership of Transnistria claims that Gazprom has announced that it will cut supplies by 40 percent in November.
