In recent years, tech giants such as Amazon and Microsoft have announced major investments in cloud infrastructure in Greece, and now it’s Google’s turn to open a cloud computing “hub.” The local press reported that the company’s investment would amount to hundreds of millions of euros, and the Greek prime minister said the plan could contribute to the creation of more than 20,000 jobs in eight years in the Greek economy.

Google executives, along with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced investments in data centers and other forms of cloud infrastructure in Greece. Google will open a so-called “cloud region” – a hub consisting of several data centers.

Greece is becoming one of the few countries in the world outside of North America where Microsoft, Amazon and Google are making significant investments in cloud computing.

The mass media in Greece previously wrote about meetings between Google executives and high-ranking Greek officials on the subject of future investments.

Two years ago, Microsoft announced an investment in cloud technology in Greece, and in April Greek authorities gave the green light for three data centers with an investment of $110 million.

Amazon’s cloud computing division opened its first office in Greece in 2021, prompting more companies as well as public sector institutions to use its services.

In December 2021, Amazon Web Services announced that it would (also) open so-called AWS Local Zones in Greece, which will provide customers with a range of cloud-related services.
