The 303-kilometer railway will connect the Omani port of Sohar with Abu Dhabi and the railway network of the Emirates, which is under construction these years. The journey on the fastest trains should take an hour and 40 minutes. The agreement was signed by Oman Rail and Etihad Rail.

Freight trains will be able to travel at a maximum speed of 120 km/h, and it is hoped that the new line will boost trade between the two countries.

The state of Oman wants to build 2,100 km of railway network from scratch. There is only one railway in Oman, a narrow-gauge railway that takes tourists to the cave.

In December 2021, the United Arab Emirates announced the next stages of the development of the railway network, which will cover almost the entire territory of the country and reach 1,200 km, after an investment of 13 billion dollars.

In 2030, it is planned to reach more than 35 million trips annually, a line for freight trains has already been built, and passenger lines will follow.
