Mazda Motor Corp is in talks with its joint venture in Russia to halt car production in that country after the invasion of Ukraine disrupted supply chains, sources told Kyodo on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity, Agerpres reported.
In March, the Japanese automaker stopped exporting auto components to its plant in the city of Vladivostok, which it operates jointly with local manufacturer Sollers, and suspended the plant’s operations.
Since 2012, the division has been producing cars for the Russian market, including the popular Mazda CX-5.
Toyota, which shut down its St. Petersburg plant in March due to supply chain disruptions, this week became the first major Japanese automaker to announce it would no longer build cars in Russia.
And Nissan recently announced that it will extend the production suspension at its plant in St. Petersburg, Russia, for another three months, until the end of December.
The plant, which has been closed since March following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was originally scheduled to open at the end of September.
“Production has been suspended in St. Petersburg until the end of December and employees have been informed. We continue to monitor the situation closely and will make the necessary decisions,” a Nissan representative said.
Nissan has already suspended car exports to Russia after the conflict with Ukraine increased logistical risks.
Nissan’s alliance partner, the French car concern Renault, was forced to sell its assets to the Russian state in May, the first large-scale nationalization completed in Russia since the start of the offensive in Ukraine.
