The Uzbek UZCARD system has suspended the processing of payments through “Mir” cards issued by the National System of Card Payments (NSPC) of the Bank of Russia, whose executive director has come under US sanctions, Reuters reports.

The measure taken by UZCARD was justified by the need to “carry out the necessary technical procedures,” it said in a statement on Friday without further explanation.

A representative of UZCARD could not be reached for immediate comment and clarification. Volodymyr Komlev, executive director of the NSPK, refused to comment on UZCARD’s message.

Moscow touted Mir as an alternative to Visa and MasterCard, which closed its network in Russia after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February.

Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on the NSPK’s Komlev, saying he was trying to hold the Russian government accountable for the February 24 invasion and continued war against Ukraine.

Shortly thereafter, Turkish banks Denizbank and Isbank suspended the use of Mir.
