The announcement was made after a meeting of American officials with Prime Minister Nicolae Chuke at Victoria Palace. At the same time, the state of implementation of endowment programs carried out through Lockheed Martin, both for multi-purpose aircraft and anti-missile defense systems, was analyzed.

What artificial intelligence projects will be developed

A partnership between the Lockheed Martin Science, Technology and Engineering Laboratory and Research Laboratory (STELaRLab) and the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca (UTCN) will explore the development of a distributed autonomous system for humanitarian aid and disaster relief that will allow better planning and execution of emergency interventions, according to a press release releases of the American company.

The prevalence and severity of natural emergencies, such as wildfires, are increasing worldwide due to climate change.

The goal of STELaRLab and UTCN is to provide automated tools that combine environmental sensor information from distributed sensing platforms with artificial intelligence to achieve better situational awareness in emergency situations.

  • “We look forward to growing our relationship with Lockheed Martin and combining our expertise to advance computational models that enable 4D environmental perception, including through the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for road areas, as well as multi-sensors for disaster recovery.” . said Professor Sergiu Nedewski from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.

The partnership, which is for an initial period of one year, will provide Romanian researchers with access to Lockheed Martin’s global research and development network, including the Lockheed Martin Center for Artificial Intelligence.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is an international aerospace and security company with approximately 114,000 employees worldwide. It specializes in the research, design, development, production, integration and maintenance of advanced technological systems, products and services.

STELaRLab, launched in Australia in 2016, is Lockheed Martin’s first interdisciplinary research and development center outside the US, focused on the study of technologies in the areas of hypersonics, autonomy, robotics, command, control, communications, computing, intelligence, surveillance and intelligence.
