Industry Minister Josef Sikela said on Friday, Reuters reports, that the Czech Republic will propose holding an extraordinary meeting of the EU Energy Council as soon as possible to solve the problem of rising energy prices.

“We are in an energy war with Russia and it is hurting the entire EU,” Sikela wrote on Twitter.

The Czech Republic currently presides over the EU.

“In agreement with the European Commission and Prime Minister Petr Fiala, I will propose convening an extraordinary meeting of the EU Council on energy issues in the near future,” Sikela said.

This month, the European Commission said it was “urgently evaluating various options for the introduction of gas price caps,” without specifying what form such a cap would take.

Brussels said it would hold consultations with EU member states on price caps and present proposals in the autumn if necessary.

The Czech statement came after wholesale natural gas prices in the Netherlands and the UK rose to their highest levels since March on Thursday.

The British regulator said on Friday that from October, Britons’ electricity bills will rise by 80% to an average of 3,500 pounds (4,200 euros) a year.

At the same time, in order not to load gas into the Nord Stream gas pipeline, the Russians burn it in huge quantities in the atmosphere.

Russia is also negotiating with several Asian countries to conclude long-term contracts for the supply of oil at deep discounts.
