“Whoever comes to the position thinks that he is not there for the rest of his life. I only fear God,” Energy Minister Virgil Popescu said Wednesday when asked if he felt targeted by his cabinet reshuffle amid the state of the energy and natural gas markets.
The Minister of Energy noted that he will continue to perform his work, because the road ahead is difficult.
Virgil Popescu: There will be a ceiling even after March 31, 2023
Asked whether the cap on energy and gas prices would continue beyond March 31, 2023, Virgil Popescu said yes and said Romanians would have no problems with their bills.
“Nothing will happen to the accounts of the Romanians (..). The price limit will remain, the leaders of the Coalition have already answered. Probably during September-October we will work on what will happen after March 31. Let’s take them one by one to complete these changes by September 1,” Popescu said.
Virgil Popescu: We think a lot about the taxation of the entire chain of production, mediation and supply
Basically, the minister was referring to the changes that should be made to the current Emergency Decree 27/2022, which sets price limits for energy carriers and gas until March 31, 2022.
“I would ask that things regarding amendments to Decree 27 be finalized in the government coalition and then made public. That’s how we got along. People will not be affected by these changes. We are thinking a lot about taxation of the entire production, brokerage and supply chain,” the energy minister said, without giving details.
Excessive taxation of the entire energy chain is a PSD proposal
Excessive taxation of the entire energy chain, from producers to intermediaries and suppliers, is one of PSD’s proposals for the energy crisis. This will limit market speculation and the possibility of huge profits for some traders.
Another PSD proposal is to regulate the price for domestic consumers after the expiration of the one-year cap, with the possibility of an extension until 2025.
Such a measure would mean lower prices for the general public, but higher prices for non-household consumers, from small and medium-sized businesses to factories, leading to higher prices for their products.
That is, we will pay less for energy, and more for other products.
