“Gas imports did not stop. Wiee, a subsidiary of Gazprom in Romania, did not stop supplying gas. Today we import 5.3 million cubic meters of gas, about 3 million cubic meters less than the previous day. There was probably no demand here in Romania,” Ion Sterian, CEO of Transgaz, told HotNews.ro on Thursday.

The general director of “Transgaz” refutes the information presented on Thursday Profit.ro which signaled that imports of Russian gas destined for the domestic market have suddenly stopped today, and only transit gas to Hungary is currently flowing into Romania.

  • “The gases that enter the national transport system of Romania through the connection with Bulgaria come with certificates or declarations under their own responsibility that they are of European origin and not only from Russia, but also from Greece, Turkey or Azerbaijan. There are several traders supplying gas, and not all of them with Russian gas, and Gazprom’s subsidiary in Romania, WIEE, has not stopped supplying gas.” This was stated by the CEO of Transgaz, Ion Sterian, to HotNews.ro.

He claims that indeed the gas volumes were lower today, but this year there have been such fluctuations depending on supply and demand.

  • “Probably there was no demand here in Romania. The ANRE licensed suppliers come and deliver gas to Romania and sell it to CET and companies. These are continuous fluctuations, never fixed volumes. It’s about supply and demand.
  • Around May this year, this volume of 5-6 million cubic meters of gas enters, but then in June it was 16-18 million cubic meters. There is no danger. This is something normal,” he said.

Director of Transgaz: Gas production in Romania has increased. There would be no problems and restrictions for the population, even if gas imports stopped

Ion Sterian claims that Romania has enough gas in reserves, and gas production has also increased.

  • “We are stockpiling 10-11 million cubic meters of gas until tomorrow morning, we have reached a percentage of 67% in terms of gas reserves for next winter above the estimated limit. We are now more than 320 million cubic meters higher than last year on the same date, and we will reach 72% by the end of August.
  • In summer, consumption is 11-13 million cubic meters per day. Last winter, peak consumption did not exceed 60 million cubic meters per day. The average figure was 55-57 million cubic meters of gas per day in January-February. Now the gas production in Romania has increased, and the daily gas production reaches about 25.5-26 million cubic meters, the production capacity has increased to 31-32 million cubic meters per day, and if we sum up, we will reach cc 55-57 million cubic meters of gas.
  • And if we took into account the cessation of all gas imports on all connections, we would do without problems, without restrictions for the population,” Ion Sterian, CEO of Transgaz, also specified for HotNews.ro.

The Transgaz chairman’s clarifications came after Profit.ro reported on Thursday that imports of Russian gas entering Romania from the Turkish Stream gas pipeline through the connection point with Bulgaria suddenly stopped at the level of 8-9 million .cubic meters/day, to one of 4.8 million cubic meters/day, of which 4.5 million cubic meters/day transit through Romania to Hungary via the connection point in Chanadpalota.
