The US Senate passed a massive $434 billion rescue package aimed at, among other things, fighting inflation. For the bill’s approval on Sunday, August 7, 51 people out of 101 voted. The deciding vote was cast by US Vice President Kamala Harris.
Some $370 billion will go towards energy security and climate protection, as well as a range of tax incentives. Another 64 billion will go to healthcare initiatives, mainly to ensure lower prices for medicines. In addition, the bill provides for stricter tax controls for companies.
The Senate’s approval of the bill is considered a major victory for US President Joe Biden, who promised major reforms when he took office a year and a half ago but has so far failed to implement them. As Democrats hope, passage of the law will allow them to retain a majority in Congress in this year’s elections.
The vote in the Chamber of Deputies is scheduled for August 12
The White House chief welcomed the Senate’s decision. “This required a lot of compromises. The House of Representatives must pass the bill as soon as possible, and I look forward to signing it,” said the White House chief. The vote in the United States House of Representatives is scheduled for August 12.
