The exchange of remarks between Sorin Grindianu and Nikushor Dan on the topic of Metrorex’s “relocation” from the Ministry of Transport to the capital’s city hall caused a wave of debate among our readers on the topic: which region “holds back” the other from an economic point of view. So I said let’s look at the numbers.
Mayor General Nikushor Dan says that “no one is stopping Bucharest”, on the contrary. And he is right. According to the latest data from the National Institute of Statistics, in 2019 the capital “produced” more than a quarter of GDP. Banat yields 9.5%, Olteni “yields” 7.7% (the least), Moldova yields 10.3% and the Southeast region 9.4%. So, the order in which the regions contribute to GDP is: Bucharest, North-West Region, Muntenia, Center of the Country, Moldova, South-East Region, Banat and Oltenia.
The rating has not changed over the past 22 years.
In 2000, the schedule looked like this:
The order 22 years ago was as follows: the capital, followed by Muntenia, the center of the country, Moldova, the southeastern region, the northwestern region, Banat and Oltenia. Therefore, North-West Romania lost second place to Muntenia, the Central region dropped to fourth place (from 3rd), and Moldova dropped from 4th to 6th place.
As an intermediate situation, below you have the contribution of regions to GDP (in %) in 2010:
