The Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster can no longer be ordered in Europe. As for the thermal Macan, the decision was made by Porsche because these two models do not meet the requirements to the new European regulations Unece / R155 and R156 related to cyber security.

New European cybersecurity laws also apply to cars and will come into effect in July 2024, from which date Porsche will no longer be able to register small sports cars in the European Union (except for the most advanced versions). to this below). Both models will continue to be sold in other markets for several more months.

The most exclusive models are released

The suspension of orders for the two small sports cars was first confirmed by Oliver Hilger, representative of the Porsche 718 range. The brand confirmed that the coupe and convertible have been withdrawn from the European catalogs, and the only 718 model still on sale will be the Cayman. GT4 RS and Boxster Spyder RS, as they are exempt from this new regulation due to limited production.
More precisely, the “problem” would be the computer architecture used in the current 718 range. Adapting the cars to the new rules would cost Porsche around half the budget spent on an all-new model, which would be financially unviable, especially since these models reach the end of their service life.
The 718 Boxster and Cayman were the only two models still available in Europe with four cylinders from Porsche. Their disappearance marks the end of the “four legs” at Porsche, an architecture that was criticized during the presentation of the two small sports cars in 2016. Porsche then “fixed it” by bringing back the flat six for the 4.0 GTS, GT4. , Spyder, GT4 RS and Spyder RS models.

Now let’s move on to the electric Porsche Cayman and Boxster

Why will the Porsche 718 family no longer be produced? You can give two answers. On the one hand, Unece / EU R155 and R156, already cited above, which require manufacturers, starting from July 2024, to take cyber security measures to protect their models from computer hacking, in particular by means of updates every other day.
The second reason: driver assistance systems. Adaptive cruise control, active lane keeping, driver attention control, automatic emergency braking. So much for ADAS, which must be present on all new cars sold in the EU from July 4, 2024, and which are not part of the standard equipment of the Porsche Cayman and Boxster. Again, with the 718 model line coming to the end of its life, it wouldn’t make sense to update a model that will disappear in 2025.
Indeed, the next generation Porsche 718 will be 100% electric, its presentation is scheduled for 2025. A revolution that was already heralded by the Mission R concept and then the 718 Cayman Gt4 ePerformance.
Even though the 718 is no longer available on the European market, it’s still possible to drive away with a brand new car thanks to the models already built and available in stock.

But time is running out, because from 1Er In July, unsold cars can no longer be registered.
