If the information provided by the CarNewsChina media is to be believed, the synergy between the brands of the Volkswagen group is evident, perhaps it has never been so because of this new car that will soon arrive in China.
Indeed, while the Volkswagen Polo, Audi A1 and the rest of the Skoda Fabia are basically the same car, they are not very similar aesthetically, not to mention that there are also some differences in terms of finish and onboard technology.
The game of seven mistakes
With the exception of its third electric SUV coming to China soon, Volkswagen probably hasn’t even bothered to hide an obvious connection to another model of the group sold in Europe. Thus, the Volkswagen Unyx, which should be presented within a few weeks, has already leaked through the Chinese administration, similar as two drops of water to the Cupra Tavascan, which will soon appear on our roads. What’s particularly funny is that the Tavascan itself is partly based on the Volkswagen ID.5, and also a bit on the Skoda Enyaq.
If the Cupra Tavascan is made in China (forget the possible environmental bonus in France…), then it is not sold there. That role will therefore be entrusted to the Volkswagen Unyx, which will be produced at the same plant as the Spanish electric SUV, a plant located in Anhui province and operated by Volkswagen and its local partner JAC Motors.
In particular, the Unyx has several features compared to the model from which it comes, except that the shield is filled and has a less aggressive style, while several specific elements, such as the LED frame that connects the two front lights, or again the 21 – inch rims distinguish it from its Spanish cousin.
A model that will not reach Europe
Unsurprisingly, under the hood it will be the same recipe as the Cupra Tavascan. It will be based on the MEB modular platform with, undoubtedly, an electric motor 286 hp placed on the rear axle, also installed on the new ID.3 GTX. The second version, probably under the GTX brand, will add a 109 hp electric motor. to the front axle with total power 340 hp transmitted to all four wheels, as in the Tavascan VZ.
The battery will undoubtedly have a capacity of 77 kWh, giving it approx 500 km of autonomy announced on its Iberian cousin, regardless of version. The launch in China is planned for the second quarter of 2024.
Here, in Europe, this model will clearly not make it.
