Take your car is never without risk. Indeed, no matter what they say, the accident, unfortunately, happens very quickly.

Road safety: not yet sufficiently developed

Indeed, no one is immune from a lack of attention, both on his part and on the part of another driver. Not to mention risky behavior such as drug or alcohol use. In short, driving is not a trivial activity, so it is very important to be alert at all times. Road Safety was also created for this, to carry out prevention and implement measures to reduce risks. In addition, the European Union has an ambitious goal of reducing road fatalities to almost zero by 2050. But achieving this requires halving the number of deaths compared to 2019 by 2030, which promises to be difficult. In 2019 22,800 people lost their lives on European roads, while this figure will increase to 20,640 in 2022. Additional efforts will be needed to reach the target, said Eva Lindström, a member of the European Chamber of Accounts.

Road safety: effort is required

The latter explains that “the EU has come a long way in terms of road safety, but too many lives are lost on our roads every day. […] At the current rate of progress, the goal of halving the number of deaths within this decade will not be met. If Europe and its member states want to achieve their goals, they will have to work harder. » Over the past five years, road deaths in the European Union have fallen by an average of 2.5%. However, this reduction is not enough to meet the 2030 target, which calls for a 4.6% reduction. This means that from July next year, all new cars sold will have to be equipped with intelligent speed limiters, which will prevent drivers from exceeding the current limits. But that’s not all, as they will also have to equip themselves with a driver monitoring system to prevent problems with drowsiness and inattention.

These measures will become mandatory from 2026.
