Recently, cycling has been developing more and more in big cities. And Vélotaf in particular.

Bicycles are popular in Bordeaux

A practice that developed in particular during the health crisis and the Covid-19 epidemic, which prompted workers to abandon public transport. In addition, the authorities are now doing everything possible to make life difficult for motorists. Obviously, this applies to Paris, but not only provincial metropolises also follow the traffic. We mention, for example, Bordeaux, where driving a car becomes increasingly difficult over time. Thus, the number of cyclists in the city increased by 7.3% in just one year. Thus, the municipality recently launched a survey to better understand the movement of cyclists and the speeds actually practiced in the Gironde. This survey also aims to develop a development typology based on speed, slope, bike type and environment. For this, volunteers are invited to register, answer the questionnaire and download itGPS Logger program.

Bicycles go fast in the city of Bordeaux

The goal? Estimate the average travel time of cyclists in the city. In addition to the potential adjustments resulting from this research to optimize bicycle travel, the actual speed will also provide an argument for promoting bicycle travel. Indeed, the choice of mode of transport is often determined by the speed used and the distances to be covered. According to the government, “during rush hour, a car travels 10 km in the city in an average of 70 minutes, while a bicycle only takes 35.” A figure that should also be fair to Bordeaux, which for many years has encouraged the use of this mode of transport, which is considered cleaner. Also, again according to the state, “a trip by bike is ten times cheaper than by car.” And here the municipality will try to check it. Currently, there is no less in the metropolis 1600 kilometers of tracks specially dedicated to cycling. From 2020 to 2023, at least 150 kilometers were added.

The municipality should undoubtedly serve as an example for others in the years to come.
