For several years, the issue of car security has become acute, in particular in the event of a break-in. This is especially true for Tesla.

Tesla is very easy to break

Indeed, a few days ago two security researchers, Talal Haj Bakri and Tommy Misk, highlighted a troubling security flaw in Tesla’s software. Their discovery has serious implications for the safety of Tesla car owners. The researchers boldly state: “As the number of cyber attacks carried out by artificial intelligence (AI) increases, Tesla does not recognize them as such.” In other words, the latest version of Tesla’s software has been superseded by new technology. And two scientists wanted to prove it right away. Here’s how in a video Talal Hajj Bakri and Tommy Misk demonstrated how they can steal Tesla account login information. Their method? The tool called Pinball Zero, a portable device designed for hackers and prohibited for sale to the general public, in theory. The latter allows you to program smart cards, analyze radio signals and even create fake WiFi access points

Security breach at Tesla

Researchers have created a fake WiFi access point near a Tesla Supercharger. Tesla users, naively believing they could connect to a fake Wi-Fi hotspot, had their credentials stolen by entering them on a fake web page in the brand’s colors. After receiving this information, Talal Hajj Bakri and Tommy Misk simply had to be near the vehicle (whose owner had seen his data stolen) to access, unlock and start it. Even multi-factor authentication has not become an insurmountable obstacle. Two friends emphasized that this security measure can be “easily bypassed.” However, the reaction of the manufacturer is surprising. The company does not classify this vulnerability as security breach, considering it different from classic piracy. However, the potential consequences for owners of American cars are quite real.

Now that AI continues to advance, automakers must redouble their efforts to protect their customers from such attacks.
