Mercedes-AMG presented a new hybrid sports car, but this time without four cylinders Auto Plus news in your smartphone

A few months ago, you probably did not miss the presentation of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E-Performance. Then the successful sports sedan from the Affalterbach company replaced its iconic V8 with a four-cylinder hybrid with a capacity of 680 hp. and a torque of more than 1000 Nm. Performance is obviously great, as you’d expect, except that the feel doesn’t really seem to be there according to early tests. At least they’re not as noticeable compared to previous V8-powered versions.

We should find this four-cylinder hybrid on other Mercedes-AMG models, but not on the new E 53 that the manufacturer has just presented to us. So there are no four legs or V8 in the program, but a six-cylinder in-line hybrid with power increased to 585 hp, or even 612 hp. with the correct options.

The most modest Mercedes-AMG?

Aesthetically, we find classic accessories from AMG, with a Panaméricana grille, front fenders that are eleven millimeters wider on each side, prominent side sills, and a diffuser incorporating four circular exhaust outlets. The sedan also features a spoiler on the trunk lid, while the wagon is more understated with simple roof rails.
Inside we find, as in more classic models, Mercedes Superscreen. The central screen is housed in a single element that smoothly extends to the right door, also integrating, as an option, a second screen located in front of the front passenger. However, digital instruments will be displayed on a third console screen above the steering column. Below the central touchscreen is a series of buttons to facilitate access to certain functions.
The infotainment system has been significantly improved, with 5G connectivity, “Hey Mercedes” voice prompts and even artificial intelligence capable of autonomously learning the driver’s preferences, from seating position to infotainment settings.
Obviously, there are some features specific to this model, starting with specific, sportier displays thanks to warmer colors, while the MBUX system gets new AMG Performance menus and the AMG Track Pace system (optional), which allows, in particular, track times and have access to information related to intensive use of the vehicle.

Up to 612 hp and power reserve on electric traction up to 100 km/h

The new E 53 is the first AMG-branded E-Class plug-in hybrid. Under the hood we find a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine supported by a synchronous electric motor providing the overall power 585 hp and 750 Nm. The electric motor integrated into the nine-speed gearbox develops 120 kW (163 hp) and 480 Nm. 612 hpwhich exactly matches the output of the latest E 63 S AMG and its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
Mercedes-AMG has not yet announced an official weight. However, given that the four-cylinder and hybrid E 400 topped the 2.3-tonne mark, the new E 53 is likely to be even heavier. Oops Nothing will change the performance figures as 0 to 100km/h is claimed 3.8 secondswith maximum speed 280 km/h. In electric mode, the car develops a speed of up to 140 km/h.
The battery is advertised as having a capacity of 28.6kWh (21.22kWh net) and is mounted at the rear under the boot floor. The manufacturer promises The 100% electric range is from 90 to 101 kilometers. In the standard configuration, the car is equipped with a charger with a capacity of 11 kW for charging with alternating current. 60kW DC fast charging is also available, which is enough to go from 10 to 80% in about 20 minutes.

As for pricing and options, we’ll still have to wait a few weeks, even if we estimate it’s hard to imagine a car below €120,000, with first deliveries expected next summer.
