The R5 E-Tech also benefits from the headroom vacated by competition in the small EV segment, most of which today prefer to sell high-end SUVs.
Even if competition is expected to increase in the coming years, notably from Volkswagen with the ID.2 expected in 2026, the R5 E-Tech currently has two direct competitors: the outdated but no less interesting Peugeot e-208. and the upcoming Citroën ë-C3. We could also mention the Dacia Spring, but which is generally a segment below, or the MG4, which, for its part, is a segment above.
Citroën ë-C3 as the main rival of Renault 5 E-Tech?
This year will see the commercial launch of the Citroën ë-C3. All in all, this will be the R5 E-Tech’s biggest competition, especially given that the Herringbone firm has taken a definite lead in social leasing and faster availability of its model. The first ë-C3 is expected on our roads at the end of the first half of the year, and the R5 will have to wait until October next year. Citroën ë-C3 has only reduced dimensions The length is 4.01 meters, or 1.9 cm more than the old generation. She does Width 1.76 meters, height 1.57 metersor 9.3 cm more than the previous one and 2.54 meters of wheelbase, like Renault.
Citroën’s interior looks a little more Spartan than Renault’s. Black color is present everywhere, plastic in general looks of quite average quality. In terms of habitability, Citroën announces 310 liters of boot space for its ë-C3, almost the same capacity as its Peugeot e-208 cousin. That’s 16 liters less than the R5 E-Tech, but 9cm longer.
The Citroën ë-C3 is based on Stellantis’ “Smart Car” platform, a cheaper platform than the CMP used by Peugeot. This platform contains an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery 44 kW/h capacity to offer autonomy of almost 320 km according to the WLTP cycle. The car is equipped with one electric motor 113 hp (83 kW)enough to allow it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h 11 seconds approximately, and reach maximum speed 135 km/h.
For its part, the current ë-C3 starts well below €25,000 and will be affordable during the first half of 2024. Citroën even announces the starting price 23,300 euroswithout taking into account the environmental bonus, which reduces the price to 19,300 euros.
Peugeot e-208 will have its say
The Peugeot e-208 was recently updated and thus preserved 4.06 meters long by 1.75 meters wide and 1.43 meters high. Materials and settings remain average for the category. At this level The 208 was a well made car and didn’t need any major changes in these areas. The trunk has a volume 309 liters (under the shelf) when the bench is in place and 342 L when the shelf is removed. The trunk takes up several liters compared to the previous version and has a decent volume.
Peugeot e-208 is equipped with an engine 156 hp and 250 Nm of torque. Note that you can also choose 208 for a small engine 136 horsepower and 260 Nm of torque, which is associated with a lower capacity battery, is shown at 50 kWh gross (46 useful kWh). The latter allows a city car to drive to 360 kilometers per charge, always according to the WLTP cycle. The range includes the E-Style trim, which starts at €33,830 (€29,830 with eco bonus) and features higher standard equipment than the Active trim with the new transmission.
Peugeot e-208 is equipped with a 156 hp engine. NMC battery 54 kW/h (51 useful kWh), which allows the city car to display a range of up to 410 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle. With a big engine and a big battery in GT guise, the e-208 starts at €37,690 without a €4,000 bonus, bringing the price down to 33,690 euros.
If you choose the base version of the Active with less equipment, the final bill will be reduced to 33,810 euros (29,810 euros with bonus).
