Demonstration in Spain for an “indefinite” period
This week, the Catalan Farmers’ Union announced a demonstration that will bring together at least 1,200 tractors across Catalonia, Spain. Among them, there are more than a hundred vehicles taken out for an “indefinite period”. closure of the AP-7 routenear the Spanish city of Figueres, about thirty kilometers from the French border.
The unprecedented move, which follows farmer demonstrations in France and across Europe, has implications forA9 motorway in Franceas it is located on the immediate continuation of the AP-7 motorway in Spain, a north-south axis that is particularly used by all motorists wishing to reach the Iberian Peninsula via the east coast of the country.
As a safety measure and at the request of the Spanish and French authorities, part of the A9 motorway is temporarily closed from Tuesday, February 27, from the Leucate interchange in Aude, north of Perpignan.
The long-awaited return to normal on the A9 highway
While Catalan farmers have announced the lifting of the motorway blockade, traffic is still struggling to return to normal: in fact, this Friday, March 1, 2024, the A9 motorway is still closed to public traffic. Spanish authorities still need to secure the affected motorway and the carriageway will need to be cleared to ensure safe traffic.
In addition, many HGVs were forced to stop at warehouses located near the A9 motorway to avoid overcrowding the secondary roads leading to Spain. They will have to too get back on the road south as soon as conditions permit.
And for now, motorists for now asked to leave the A9 motorway north of Perpignanand it is still possible to travel to the south of the country and to Spain by departmental roads, particularly through Le Pertus: however, considerable traffic difficulties are still to be expected on these various routes.
In France, similar movements of farmers also took place a few weeks ago in protest against rising taxes, as well as the European “Green Deal”.
