Dangerous driving
Obtaining a license is obviously not an easy task. But once it’s in your pocket, you know you’ll keep it for the rest of your life, or almost. Obviously, it happens that the latter is withdrawn after the offense has been committed or when several of them have been committed in a row. But for several months, the European Union has been considering the possibility of canceling the lifetime license by introducing a mandatory medical examination that must be completed every 15 years. The debate has been going on for years, and many motorists find themselves helpless in the face of elderly relatives who do not want to give up the wheel, despite their age. This is, for example, the case of Ilan’s grandmother, 18 years old, who was interviewed by our colleagues from BFM TV. The latter explains that she is “dangerous in her behavior […] Every time it’s terrible, we get honked everywhere because it’s too slow.” He explains that other motorists lose their patience “often rightly” and don’t know what to do to impress her.

Real risks
Elodie, also interviewed by BFM journalists, explains that her father, aged 78 and almost deaf, is a real danger to himself and others. She explains that “he runs a red light, goes two an hour and doesn’t hear what’s going on around him, no motorcycles, no ambulances.” The problem is, he doesn’t want to know anything and is convinced of itperform better than everyone else. But then what to do? For geriatrician Sylvie Bonin-Guillaume, “creating the specter of a ban among the elderly is counterproductive,” as the latter “will try at all costs to prove that they can still drive.” However, you can report your loved one to the prefect, who may require a fit-to-drive examination by a medical expert. After that, the latter will be able to decide whether a person can still get behind the wheel, or whether he will have to leave the keys to his car.
