It wouldn’t be surprising to learn that all cars look the same these days. With the growing popularity of SUVs, the automotive sector became standardized. Be it silhouette, lines or design, from one brand to another we often have the impression that we see identical models, exact copies. And, unfortunately, new restrictions related to electricity will not change this trend. We can only miss the days when manufacturers tried to offer unique models. They put a lot of effort into offering a model that would stand out from the competition. Risks that were not always rewarded, which were sometimes described as commercial flops, but which had the merit of existing, bringing a breath of fresh air to this segmented market. here The most notable failures of Peugeot since the post-war period.
Peugeot 604 (1975-1985)
This imposing sedan had to be positioned Peugeot in the high-end segment, at a time when Citroën launched its CX and Renault its R30. It was considered too expensive and too energy-intensive for that timeshe didn’t offer expected processing level for a car of this caliber, especially compared to German models. In the end, she found it 153,266 buyers for decades of production.
Peugeot 605 (1989-1999)
Although it learned from its previous mistakes, the 604’s successor, the Peugeot 605, was not very successful either. Although 605 is better equippedespecially in the area of electronic equipment, properly motorized and reasonably priced, build quality and poor reliability early in his career put an end to his aspirations. Only 254,501 units half of what was originally expected was sold.
Peugeot 607 (1999-2010)
The saying “two without three is never” has been confirmed Peugeot in 1999 with the release of the 607. Following the same philosophy as its predecessors, this large sedan took the 605 chassis, but with a much more distinctive design. You’d think that when faced with competitors like the Vel Satis and C6, which weren’t unanimously popular at the time, the 607 would have stood a chance. However, outside of France, the model failed to seduce. With barely 160,000 copies sold after 11 years of production, the era of Peugeot’s large sedans was over.
Peugeot 1007 (2005-2009)
What about 1007? The idea of creating a small compact MPV based on the 206 platform was smart, as well as the addition of sliding doors to adapt to urban restrictions. However, the additional weight of this system, related to the poor operation of engines at the beginning of production, made this car a real “snail” on the road. Add to that not very harmonious silhouette and sky-high price on time, and you will have an almost guaranteed commercial failure. Only 124,100 units were produced until 2009, despite help from private sales.
Peugeot 4007/4008
Although these two models are different, their philosophy is similar: The 4007 and 4008 were Peugeot’s first SUVs, but they were actually based on Mitsubishi models – the Outlander for one, the ASX for the other. Too expensive, too fuel-guzzling and launched at a time when CO2 emissions regulations were tighter, leading to increased environmental fine, this Franco-Japanese duo failed miserably. Only 49,000 units for the first, and even less, 36,000 per second !
