This is a trend that many car manufacturers are following in the era of electrification: neoretro!
When electric cars and neo-retro go hand in hand
Some of them believed that they had found the answer to the transition to electric current, creating models with an original design that sometimes borders on “toy” and is very different from thermal or hybrid models. Many of them are going back today to restyle their electric cars with traditional models. : Volkswagen and its ID, Mercedes-Benz and its EQ have already announced a complete change of strategy for their upcoming new products. At the same time, other manufacturers have taken advantage of something else to sell their EVs: nostalgia. Offer modern reinterpretations of historic vehicles, an electric pill would be easier to pass. This is the choice made by Fiat with its 500, Mini with its Mini, Volkswagen with its ID.Buzz (inspired by the 1950 Combi), Renault with its R5 or even Ford with its Mustang Mach-E. A strategy that seems to be paying off as several competitors are also getting in on it, as evidenced by the future MG Cyberster, BMW New Class and Nissan Micra. Among all the players in the market, there is one that has received less support than the others: Stellantis.
The new Fiat Panda will be incredibly retro
A Franco-Italian-American group that certainly stands out in this area with its Fiat 500e and Topolino, still aspired to neo-retro, for example at Peugeot (whose e-Legend concept was nevertheless ambitious), Citroën, Opel or Alfa Romeo, which make up a total of fourteen brands. Things seem to be picking up speed again Fiat has just presented the concept of an all-new electric Fiat Panda which will be presented in July. Its styling is definitely an homage to the original 1980 Panda. Cubic silhouette, old-fashioned four-stripe Fiat logo, square headlights and a faux-adventurer look : this 21st century Panda will speak to many people. On board, too, the design of the doors and the shape of the seats, which are reminiscent of the country fabrics of the time, are a nice nod to the old Italian grandmother. This new Panda will have global ambitions, so much so that the group plans to offer it in several body styles: family SUV, pickup truck (to replace the Fiat Strada), minivan and SUV with a view Fastback (to replace the Fiat Fastback). One model will be deployed per year starting in 2027.
The new Panda, which will open the ball, will be after 2026 and the disappearance of the current Panda (which will take the name Pandina) in gasoline and 48-volt hybrid variants.
