Chinese automotive group SAIC, the owner of MG, is building on its success in Europe and will soon launch a completely new line of models…
MG continues to expand its European range
Only in France last year, the British manufacturer MG (which now flies under the Chinese flag) has sold more than 34,000 cars. Excellent performance, mainly due to the success of its electric compact MG4, of which long range and X-Power versions are coming to market. A success that the Sino-British manufacturer intends to continue in 2024 with the release of no less than four new products! Including there will of course be the Cyberster, reviving the MG roadster tradition, inspired in particular by MGA and MGB headlights. But during the first quarter, MG will also launch a B-segment city car, MG3, which will be unveiled to great fanfare at the Geneva Motor Show next week. A model that will join the expected battle in the small electric market with a starting price that we believe will be very aggressive. Then two more new models will appear: a larger and more luxurious electric SUV that will compete with the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4 and others. And a new model derived from the MG4. Some rumors suggest a version of the latest wagon to replace the current MG5, but nothing official at this stage.
IM Motors arrives in Europe
Following the calendar, the Chinese group SAIC (of which MG is a part) will introduce a second brand in Europe, positioned as a premium: IM, co-developed with tech giant Alibaba. But contrary to what we thought, this name will never come to Europe. Our colleagues from CarNewsChina confirm this today The IM models will be distributed under the MG brand, as well as in South America. Today, IM’s offerings are limited to the Chinese market only four models in the assortment. L7 large sedan and LS7 SUV, and L6 midsize sedan and LS6 SUV. IM models are promised to be equipped with 90 or 100 kWh batteries radius of action from 600 to 800 kilometers, according to Chinese Approval Cycles (CLTC). Will they keep these surnames for their arrival on the Old Continent? Nothing is less certain, but SAIC may in any case decide to adopt a new nomenclature to better differentiate the positioning of these two brands. They will be proudly displayed at the Geneva Motor Show, possibly already with their definitive MG badges. Under this strategy, SAIC prefers to build on MG’s successwell known to Europeans, rather than launching a new brand that speaks to no one.
The arrival of these new models will also make this possible make the MG brand more attractive and desirableeven if it doesn’t seem like much considering the excellent sales figures it has recorded in recent months!
