Volvo is taking advantage of the beginning of the year to reorganize its range somewhat by aligning the names of some of its models.
Volvo continues its electrification
At Volvo, electrification is taking its course. The Swedish manufacturer, which previously specialized in diesel and turbocharging (among other things), has in recent years started 180 degree turn to 100% electricity. It must be said that Volvo is now flying under the Chinese flag, since its acquisition by the global giant Geely. A specialist in electric and hybrid models, Geely has acquired know-how in battery technologies and charging architectures. Skills that the Chinese group has applied to most of its brands: Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Lynk&Co, Zeekr, Lotus, LEVC, Proton etc… At Volvo, it was the XC40 crossover that opened the dance in 2020, inaugurating the name “Recharge”, which until now covered the 100% electric and hybrid versions of the brand’s models. It is inherited by all models in the range, from the S60 and S90 sedans to the XC60 and XC90 SUVs, including the V60 and V90 wagons and the C40 crossover coupe. The “electrified” range is essentially a plug-in hybrid (only the XC40 and C40 Recharge are 100% electric), which actually corresponded to only the first part of the global plan: to become 100% electric in 2030…
EX, EC, EM: Electric attack initiated
Pursuing this goal, Since then, Volvo has been working on expanding its 100% electric lineup. The brand was launched last year compact EX30, to compete with Renault Mégane E-Tech and Volkswagen ID.3 in particular. It also received a new name: EX, which stands for “electric crossover.” Eventually, all battery-powered models will have a name starting with the letter “E”. EX90 large SUV, the electric alternative to the XC90 we know so well, will soon be on our roads. the same Volvo is preparing a family minivan for the Chinese market: the EM90for the “Electric MPV” based on the Zeekr 009. In Europe, another long-awaited novelty is the replacement of the XC60 crossover, EX60 due next year. In anticipation of all its models, and in the interests of clarity and uniformity, Volvo is changing the names of many models in its range to better distinguish between electric vehicles and those that still use unleaded gas. Stop saying Volvo XC40 and C40 Recharge, now say: EX40 and EC40. The models are almost unchanged – they still get the Twin Performance engine with a capacity of 442 hp. – but bring their names in line with the new electrical nomenclature. The plug-in hybrid models also drop the “Recharge” suffix and are simply called the T6 and T8, depending on the power level.
Therefore, from now on, the assortment will be structured around the following letters: E (EX, EC, EM) for electric, T (T6, T8) for plug-in hybrids, B (B3, B4, B5) for mild hybrid models (mild-Hybrid).
