Severe shortage
A driver’s license is often required. This is especially true for those who need a car to get to work. Except it obviously doesn’t happen instantly and takes time, in addition to being very expensive. Because in addition to studying, you also need to wait for a place to become available. And unfortunately, it can last a very long time. This is especially relevant at the moment. Indeed, there was a shortage of places for taking driving tests a real headache. But this situation, particularly visible in Ile-de-France, also affects other departments such as Somme and Finistère, as our colleagues at Permismag.com point out. So much so that some institutions have had to act, like this driving school in Val d’Oise, which sends some candidates to take their practical driving test in the Vendée, where the pressure is much less.

The fault of the Olympics?
There are many reasons for this crisis. In the first place is the lack of inspectors. THE Traffic education offices (BER), responsible for manpower management, seems overwhelmed by the developments. Between long-awaited retirements, unrecovered sick days and transfers from one department to another, the ranks are empty. Hiring is well planned, but the process is long. The training of new inspectors takes 12 months. This deficit occurs under difficult conditions. In addition to being able to get a car license from the age of 17 and funding a motorcycle license through a personal training account (CPF), the Olympics have an impact. Indeed, to meet the increased demand, RATP and transport companies are massively recruiting drivers of heavy goods vehicles and public transport. Permismag explains that “inspectors are mobilized to prioritize these inspections of heavy goods vehicles. The problem: RATP driver training time has been cut in half… and so has the pass rate. Thus, a significant number of examination places are “lost” due to lack of foresight.
