The A4 as we know it is about to get a… name change! The Audi company actually decided to review the entire nomenclature of its range. From now on, 100% electric models will be decorated with an even number, and odd numbers will be displayed only on models equipped with an internal combustion engine. Therefore, the A4 will become fully electric, and its thermal versions will be renamed the A5.
All the bodies will remain there unless…
Aside from the name change, all variants of the A4 we know today should continue to be offered in the future. Or almost… Several still largely camouflaged prototypes of the German have already been spotted in the Far North as well as the outskirts of Ingolstadt. Among them we find, in particular, vehicles the body of the Sportback sedan with a retractable roof, but also breakwith. The only body that has not yet shown the tip of the nose: a classic sedan with three boxes. So it’s possible that Audi will take advantage of the range change to ditch the latter and focus on the Sportback 4-door coupe. more popular On the design side, despite their heavy camouflage, the various stolen photos found all over the internet suggest thatThe German family car will have an increasingly large front grille. At the rear, it should benefit from a light signature that runs across the width of the trunk. Finally, inside we should find a dashboard similar to that of the future Q6 e-tron, namely a large curved dual screen.
Gasoline, diesel and even plug-in hybrid RS5
From the technical side, we already know that the thermal versions of the A4, which will be renamed the A5, will be based on the same PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) platform as its upcoming big sister, the A7. It is nothing more and nothing less than an improved version of the current MLB architecture used by the entire German group. Obviously, the brand with the rings likes to change its name. On the other hand, this platform means that we will always find gas blocks and diesel classic under the hood A5. There will be more more than likely electrified with a 48V mild hybrid system to meet the new Euro 7 standards. The A5 should also win for the first time with a plug-in hybrid engine with a large battery about a hundred kilometers of electric travel. Sporty S and even radical versions of the RS will also be there again and again. Always wider, more dynamic and nastier, the latter should even be the first RS-badged Audi to take advantage of a plug-in hybrid engine. Unfortunately, we still don’t know if it will keep the V6 like the current generation, or if its thermoblock will be downsized to a 4-cylinder like the latest version of the C63 AMG, one of its direct competitors.
Along with these numerous thermal options, the family model with rings will also exist in a 100% electric version. Even more mysteriously, we just know that it will be based on the new PPE platform developed in partnership with Porsche and already found in the new Macan as well as the upcoming Q6 e-tron. It remains unknown when the new electric A4 and thermal A5 will be officially presented…
