Forced electrical transition

The most controversial aspect of this proposal is ban on building new ones gas station and expansion of existing stations. The move drew sharp criticism from the California Fuel and Convenience Alliance (CFCA), which raised concerns about the impact on businesses and motorists who can’t use electricity. Critics particularly point to the high cost of electric vehicles and the need for affordable solutions to ensure a just transition.

Install fast chargers or you’ll be shut down

However, Sacramento is not simply banning the construction of new gas stations. The city took a proactive approach by anticipating this existing stations will only be allowed to operate if they contain fast chargers with a capacity of at least 50 kW, in an amount equivalent to fuel pumps. This requirement aims to promote fast charging of electric vehicles, making this option more convenient and attractive for motorists.
This Sacramento initiative is part of a broader trend seen in other California municipalities. In 2021, Petaluma led the way in adopting similar measures, followed by other cities such as Calistoga, Rohnert Park, and more. The movement is gaining momentum even outside of California, with cities such as Memphis, Tennessee, and Louisville, Colorado, implementing gas station moratoriums.
Controversy aside, this shift to electric cars and fast-charging infrastructure are highlights growing commitment of local authorities to more environmentally sustainable solutions.

As demand for electric vehicles grows, these measures aim to prepare cities for a future where renewable energy and clean technologies will play a central role in urban mobility.
