Rising price

If you’re used to driving, especially to work, you’ve probably noticed this the price at the gas station very high And this, to tell the truth, is nothing new, since this trend began two years ago, with the beginning of the war in Ukraine. And since then, it continues tirelessly, to the great disappointment of motorists. But what is the reason for this situation? Well, the CLCV consumer association has little idea. According to her, this trend is mainly explained by the increase in the gross profitability of fuel distributors, quite simply. The latter also just revealed in a report published on Thursday that gross profit rose to 26 cents per liter of SP95 petrol and 22.2 cents per liter of diesel fuel. These gross transportation/distribution rates are considered “unacceptable” by the organization, which condemns the enrichment of distributors at the expense of consumers.

Margin too high

If last summer distributors had committed to reducing those margins, that promise would have been short-lived. Indeed, the association regrets that “unfortunately, they went up again in November.” Therefore, the latter “underlines the need to question the fair remuneration of distributors” and believes that they should “respect their obligation not to practice excessive margins and make an effort of about five to eight centimes per liter.’ In addition, in the period from September to the end of 2023, distributors also carried out transactions at cost. This revealed significant differences, especially between major retail brands (Leclerc, Système U, Intermarché, Carrefour) and large oil groups (Esso Express, Total Access). While some have played the game by lowering prices by 3-6%, others like Total or AVIA have not made much of an effort.
