Why will China control batteries for decades? Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

With the transition to electricity, China is positioning itself more than ever as a major player in this sector: manufacturing cars, with engines, with batteries, etc. Companies involved in the development of these areas continue to expand with double-digit growth.

China has a plan to maintain leadership positions

For example BYD obviously. The group, which used to be a simple manufacturer of batteries for small devices, is on the verge of establishing itself in the global electric car market. Its catalog has expanded and it sells “battery” cars in Europe and the United States in addition to Asia. Other newer companies like CATL, for example, are experiencing rapid growth. Founded in 2011, the company currently supplies batteries for the giant Tesla, as well as all brands of the Stellantis group. With such thriving businesses on its soil and extensive technological patents, China has a clear advantage over electricity. But the Chinese government wants to take this colossal competitive advantage even further. The government wants its industry to crush competitors from the rest of the world and prepare a vital alliance that will focus on the development of the next generation of solid-state batteries. Understand this, solid state batteries, which are safer than lithium-ion modules, consist offlammable liquid electrolyte and dangerous. Members of this new union include BYD and CATL.

BYD and CATL as major players in the battery industry

Over the decades, China has become the center of industry, not only in terms of production, but also in terms of development. There are millions of electric cars equipped with Chinese batteries around the world. As mentioned earlier, CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited) is a technology leader in this field. The world’s largest manufacturer is capable of producing one element per second. Recently, CATL even announced that it has developed a super battery capable of self-recovery 400 kilometers of autonomy in just 10 minutes. Together with BYD, the two companies represent more than 50% of the world’s production of batteries for electric vehicles. BYD, which has its own technology, has been developing the LFP (lithium ferrophosphate) battery for several years.

The two companies at the heart of this plan?

According to Japanese economic media Nikkei Asia, BYD and CATL may join forces. Other companies such as NIO, CALB, EVE Energy and Gotion High-Tech are also mentioned. China wants to build this alliance as soon as possible in order to start large-scale production of solid-state batteries as soon as possible. To ensure mass production, the alliance will be able to count on significant government subsidies from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and, finally, technology and the national administration. Energy. The media specify that this cooperation in the battery sector will allow China to become a major “automotive power” in a few years.
