Ford is developing a low-cost electric platform Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Ford just announced it, as the manufacturer is already putting its new electric strategy into practice. A strategy that the brand seems to have been working on for some time, but in great secrecy…

“This flexible platform will serve as the basis for several vehicles”

The least we can say is that Ford’s range of electric cars is not doing well. On the one hand, the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E are trying to bring real money into Ford’s coffers. On the other hand, the start of marketing of the new Explorer SUV, which is based on the Volkswagen architecture in order to reduce the cost of production, is postponed. But, fortunately, Ford has clearly already taken the bull by the horns. For two years and under the strictest secrecy, the brand with the blue oval has been working hard on a new electric platform that will give birth to inexpensive models! “Yes, several,” as Jim Farley, president of Ford, explains: “ this flexible platform will not only serve as the basis for many types of vehicles, but will also take advantage of the software and services we now see in the professional range “. This new architecture will allow the American manufacturer to face “ Tesla and Chinese manufacturers are available “. Without a doubt, we can’t wait to find out! First of all, we have to face the facts: Although Ford has presented a convincing first electric model in the form of the Mustang Mach-E SUV, the manufacturer is struggling to continue its momentum…

An electric Ford for less than €25,000?

Ford currently offers four all-electric models in its lineup: the F-150 Lightning, the Mustang Mach-E, the E-Tourneo Custom and the Explorer. That’s all well and good, but in reality, only one of these cars can be ordered in France today. The pickup truck is actually mostly reserved for the American market. As for the E-Tourneo Custom and the smaller Explorer SUV, while they’ve already been announced and introduced, it’s not yet possible to order a copy at a dealership. The only 100% electric vehicle currently available in Ford showrooms is the Mustang Mach-E SUV. And unfortunately, we cannot qualify it as affordable electricity its starting price in France is just over €50,000. As for his younger brother, Exploreif at the time of the presentation its starting price was announced as less than 45,000 euros, this very welcome today! Worse, the starting price of several of these direct competitors has now dropped since March 2023 and its official registration… Therefore, it is extremely important for Ford to offer more affordable electric models, which the manufacturer should be able to do thanks to the new platform. Why not imagine an electric Ford for less than €25,000? compete with Dacia Spring, Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3 and other Volkswagen ID.2 in Europe?

We’re not going to hide it, we can’t wait to see what kind of model this new electric platform will create. Why not a spiritual descendant of the Focus, or even better, a Fiesta! Unfortunately, we’ll still have to wait a bit before we know, as cars on this new architecture won’t see the light of day until 2025 or even 2026.
