After more than half a decade in the premium electric sedan market, in 2019 the Tesla Model S met the Porsche Taycan. More than a successful first foray into the world of electricity for Porsche, with a sedan that is both sporty and quite versatileeven if its scope initially put some customers off a bit.
Then the Porsche sedan evolved with some improvements and new versions, until today, when Porsche presents the first real restyling of its Taycan. In the program, therefore, a version of almost 1000 hp, autonomy, which is growing rapidly, and modern technologies.
The ultimate traveler with the new Porsche Taycan?
As you can see from the photos, from an aesthetic point of view the changes are minor and are generally in line with the styling of the new Macan that was unveiled a few days ago. The Porsche Taycan uses new front and rear fenders with refined aerodynamics, a specific design and more prominent air intakes on the Turbo and Turbo S versions. The headlights have been changed, and the rear includes a long light strip with an illuminated Porsche logo.
Inside, the changes are minimal, and the livability, which is generally the weak point of the Taycan, does not change. The trunk (407 l on the sedan and 446 l on the station wagon), as well as the trunk (84 l), retains its capacity. You’ll actually have to dig through the screens to see a few changes. The screens don’t change, but the infotainment system evolves a bit, as does the distilled information. Another passenger screen can be added with an opaque filter to watch video while driving without disturbing the driver. Good news for travelers, the navigation system integrates a new route planner with information on charging stations and battery pre-conditioning. The head-up display also includes a Mercedes-like augmented reality projection to more accurately indicate destinations. Driving aids are also better calibrated for better driving.
The range and power of each version increases
As for the technical part, there are more changes. Already now, the Turbo S version goes from 761 to 952 hp and 1100 Nm of torque, which allowed the Taycan to beat the Tesla Model S Plaid recently at the Nürburgring. Then there’s the Turbo version, which is evolving 884 hp and the 4S version can reach 598 hp. Even the base model with rear-wheel drive (with one electric motor located on the rear axle) is scary 408 hpnot taking into account overboost for 95 hp.
As for the batteries, they are equipped with NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) type cells that benefit from a new chemistry that allows them to reduce their weight by 9 kg, while increasing its capacity, which increases from 93.4 kWh to 105 gross kWh (97 useful kWh). . Only the rear-wheel-drive Taycan will be eligible for a “smaller” battery, around 90 kWh. All batteries also benefit from better temperature management, giving us, according to Porsche, 35% greater range. And on paper it changes everything, as the base power version is announced at WLTP range 678 km compared to 503 km earlier on the old one, and 630 km on the Turbo version against 467 km. So more autonomy, but also even faster fast charging. The charging power now reaches 320 kW, compared to 270 kW on the old DC. Enough to fill from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes.
All Porsche Taycans (sedan, Sport Turismo and Cross Turismo) now get adaptive air suspension as standard, while Porsche Active Ride can be ordered as an option on all-wheel drive versions.
