The verdict was delivered on Sunday night: Parisians voted in favor of PS Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s proposal to triple parking rates for the heaviest vehicles.

The “for” side won with 54.55% of the vote, but the turnout was low, mobilizing only 5.68% of voters, caused criticism. The proposal, which was put to a vote in 38 places in the capital, aimed to create a fixed rate for parking heavy, bulky and polluting private cars. A little more than 78,000 voters out of 1.3 million who have the right to vote came to express their opinion.

Jackpot for Paris City Hall?

Thermal and hybrid vehicles weighing more than 1.6 tonnes or 2 tonnes for electric vehicles will have to pay higher parking rates: 18 euros per hour in the central areas and 12 euros in the suburbs. According to City Hall estimates, about 10% of the fleet will be affected by this additional fee, thus creating about 35 million euros of additional income.
The municipality justifies this measure by the need to fight pollution, promote better shared use of public space and improve road safety. Indeed, according to City Hall, accidents involving SUVs are twice as common for pedestrians as accidents involving regular cars. Implementation of this reform is planned for 1Er September, after his speech at the Paris Council in May. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, expressed her satisfaction with this result, calling it “pride”.

Inspired by other cities in France?

This vote in Paris may inspire other French cities to take similar measures. In Lyon, for example, the city hall of environmentalists is considering the possibility of introducing from June a progressive parking rate based on the weight of vehicles, both for residents and visitors.

A similar approach was also implemented in Grenoble.
