Land Rover Defender convertible: the missing link! Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

The original Land Rover, released in 1948was designed, above all, as a versatile, simple and affordable car.

“Zemlya” of 1948, a universal machine

It was as well as a tourist model, an SUV and an agricultural machine able to carry and tow heavy loads. Following this multi-purpose logic, Land Rover has produced it in numerous body styles and lengths over the years. Long wheelbase (names Defender 110 and 130) or short (Defender 90), glazed, leaf, pickups and even in the cabriolet version for Defender 90, with removable hard top depending on use. He had a very long career, with an almost unchanged silhouette until 2016! Its departure left the field open for the last few true 4X4s on the market, starting with the Jeep Wrangler, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes-Benz G-Class (which has also since disappeared) and the Suzuki Jimny. There was a reason for this: Defender “II” was introduced in 2020but now as a large luxury off-roader, not as a rural all-terrain vehicle as it was in the Land of 1948… It is also offered in 90, 110 and 130 versions, but as for the body offered only in closed versiononly the “hard top” (non-removable) version offered him a service version…

The Defender Convertible is back!

Just to fill this gap Dutch coachbuilder Heritage Customs now offers the long-awaited convertible version. The “Valiance Defender”, as they called it, is based on the Defender 90, a short three-door chassis. For this transformation, the hardtop was removed and replaced with a canvas hood, which now rests on roll bars. Heritage Customs thought of it as “high luxury” model focused on wealthy clients. On board he receives specific processing of upholstery, materials and decor, much more luxurious than the standard Defender. Yes, it’s chic, but it’s also practical because, despite its small size, six people can sit on board: three in the front and three in the back.
So, “how much does it cost?” “. We already have to assume that Land Rover Netherlands is asking €121,531 for the Defender 90. Before that, expect almost 68,000 euros for the transformation. The only choice available to the customer is the engine: diesel, gasoline or hybrid. Only 5 copies will be producedfor a few lucky people personally chosen (and already Heritage Customs customers, of course).

The coachbuilder who created it, Nils Van Rooy, is not the first to succeed, as he is also responsible for numerous transformations of production cars into sports wagons such as the Rolls-Royce Wraith. Tesla Model S or even Ferrari Maranello!
