At the beginning of the year, financing offers are going well, especially from social leasing. But in addition to the system, which this year should cover only 20,000-25,000 files, according to the government, manufacturers are also creating their more “classic” offerings.
And how they create their proposals for electric cars with an environmental bonus, which has not yet been officially introduced in 2024, and we are already at the end of January ?
A bonus of 4000 or 5000 euros?
Because yes, usually published at the end of the previous year, this decree announcing the exact amount of the environmental bonus for the following year is still pending in the third week of January. This delay raises concerns about the coherence and consistency of the government’s actions, particularly in adopting new eligibility rules and amounts.
There are unconfirmed rumors about a possible reduction of €1,000 from the €5,000 allocated to the richest households, while the bonus for companies can go up to 2,000 euros. However, these changes have not been confirmed, although the total budget allocated to incentives to buy electric cars is confirmed at €1.5 billion, up from €1.7 billion in 2023.
A pending decree is apparently non-retroactive, ce, which means that the sizes of the environmental bonus and the conversion bonus will remain unchanged until its publication. This information, although beneficial for car buyers in January, needs to be confirmed in the next resolution. This is why manufacturers continue to advertise the €5,000 bonus on their websites.
The price war has already begun
At the same time, manufacturers, regardless of whether they are eligible for the 2024 bonus, have already launched a frenzied price competition for electric cars in France. Despite the delay of the decree, price reduction is significant, bringing electric city cars closer to their thermal counterparts. Some electric models are now offered close to €20,000 or even below that threshold.
In addition, manufacturers excluded from this system rolled up their sleeves and now offer discounts to somehow “compensate” for the lack of bonuses. This is especially the case for MG, which is practicing commercial discounts for the first time, while Renault has also recently reduced the prices of some of its models, even if they are still eligible for the bonus.
