This is not surprising, among all car manufacturers, the electric race is starting. On the part of Germany, the competition in the premium segment is still fierce: BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are fighting fiercely there! “I” for the first, “Equalizer” for the second and “e-tron ยป for the latter, everything is fine to expand its range as much as possible. SUV, sedan, sporty, compact: they multiply models to try to gain an edge. We at BMW have been actively solving this problem in recent years. The brand was already a pioneer in electrics compared to its competitors, which shows i3 and i8 released in 2013 and 2014. In recent months, the number of models has increased many times, starting with i5 and i7 sedansas well as the iX2 coupe SUV.
Neue Klasse: BMW’s electric upgrade
But the one on which many hopes are placed Neue Klasse, which is the prophet of the next generation of electric sedans on a BMW. A long-range electric car that will compete with the upcoming Audi A6 e-tron (in particular). Introduced last year, the Vision Neue Klasse concept (which represents it) borrows some styling elements from the iCircular concept presented at the Munich Motor Show more than two years ago. But this time it’s a classic sedan notchback, with dimensions close to the 3 series, a real cornerstone of the manufacturer’s range. Therefore, we can see this as a prerequisite for the future family sedan. And if so, the changes promise to be radical! Especially this BMW promises the first serial production of Neue Klasse models within two years. Six models will be released quickly, until 2027.
Made at home
As Chris Bangle did in the early 2000s, the style is a radical departure from what the manufacturer is currently producing. Surface treatment, light signature, volumetric ratio between the sheet metal and the glass part – everything changes radically. And since this Neue Klasse will be electric, the famous “nostril” grills have finally found a more reasonable size. Technically, we know what these future BMWs will use a new generation of engines and, above all, batteries.
The latter should provide up to 30% more autonomy without additional weight and a 25% increase in efficiency. The charging power will also increase significantly and can increase to more than 250 kW, for ultra-fast charging. BMW confirmed this week that this new mysterious Neue Klasse will be assembled from 2026 in its historic stronghold of Munich! The plant is currently undergoing a transformation that required an investment of 650 million euros. This shows the importance of this model for the brand!
