And for good reason, this is an eco-tax, which was first mentioned in 2007. It was then supposed to enter into force during 2014 with one goal: to tax heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons. But due to a massive popular protest, this measure was finally canceled, and the porticoes were preserved. And ten years later, the government is bringing the idea of ​​this tax back to the table. In fact, a new decree published on December 31 establishes the new measurement is very close from what was left ten years ago.

However, the settings are slightly different. Tolls for heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes will now vary based on emissions, according to a government document. The measure effectively follows a 2022 European directive that was due to come into effect by March 2024. But actually the last one will work for new contracts or not until at least the 2030s. In addition, it is also specified that the toll will be increased at the expense of “fees for external costs related to air pollution due to traffic.”
