Volkswagen: encouraging first results for revolutionary battery Auto Plus news in your smartphone Auto Plus news in your inbox

Volkswagen, like many other manufacturers, is working on the batteries of the future, in particular on these famous solid-state batteries, also called solid-state batteries. For this, the German firm has teamed up with QuantumScape, an American startup whose main shareholder is Volkswagen.

The German manufacturer recently announced encouraging test results on batteries supplied by QuantumScape. Especially, The solid-state battery prototype exceeds engineers’ expectations with excellent performance.

Batteries that wear out less in Volkswagen

Battery life is one of the most important aspects for our future electric vehicles. Volkswagen said the QuantumScape solid-state battery, tested in German laboratories by PowerCo, a Wolfsburg Group company specializing in batteries, recorded capacity loss of only 5% after 1000 charging cycles.

In practice, this means that this battery can allow an electric car travels 500,000 km, retaining 95% of its original power. This result far exceeds conventional targets where a solid-state battery is considered market-ready if it loses 20% of its capacity after 700 cycles.

What is a solid state battery?

But what is a solid-state battery in practice? Solid state batteries, or semiconductor batteries, or even Solid state battery (SSB) in English is a technology that will contribute to the democratization of electric cars in the coming years. The advantages are numerous: they provide greater autonomy, and their service life can exceed 15 years.

Cooldown times have also been greatly improved: some solid state batteries can actually be charged to 80% in just a few minutes, which significantly reduces the time spent stopping at a charging station during long journeys. Solid-state batteries also have the environmental advantage of containing fewer heavy metals and limiting the risk of fire.
