At the start of every new year, we obviously wish each other a “Happy New Year”, we also list the new arrivals this year, and unfortunately, we also take stock of the incidents recorded on New Year’s Eve.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen gave an “encouraging” assessment of New Year’s Eve during a conference held on Monday in Montarges, Loire. The figures released show a marked improvement on the previous year, highlighting a generally “quiet” night across the country. But looking a little closer, it turns out that there are some errors in the calculations.

Calculations are bad

According to the minister’s statements, as of 7 am the number of arrests reached 380, which is 10% less than last year. The trend is also observed in incidents involving vehicles, p 745 cars burnedwhich reflects a similar decrease of 10%.

The problem, and as emphasized in the note under the post of Gerald Darmanin under his post on the social network these figures do not seem quite true : “G. Darmanin declares a 10% drop in the number of burned vehicles on New Year’s Eve 2024, giving the figure of 745 burned cars. However, 1Er In January 2023, 690 burned cars were announced. Therefore, it is not a drop of 10%, but an increase of 8%. »

In recent years, fewer cars were lit on New Year’s Eve

The fact remains that in recent years this indicator has a tendency to decrease. 1Er In January 2022, 874 cars were reported burned on New Year’s Eve in Bovo Square, and the ministry also reported more than 1,000 car fires in individual years, including 2012, 2014 and 2018.

The worst year was certainly 2020, when about 1,500 fires were declared, but the ministry did not officially report the results to avoid escalation.
