Adventurers Chris and Julie Ramsey finally have completed their 100% electric journey in Nissan Aria, which this year moved them from the North to the South Pole, in Antarctica. This extraordinary expedition enabled them to make the journey 30,000 km aboard Nissan’s new electric SUV for a unique off-the-beaten-path adventure.
“On behalf of all Nissan employees, I congratulate you on the completion of Pole to Pole. We all admire your daring spirit and passion for pushing the boundaries of electrical adventure. It has been an extraordinary journey and a source of pride for us at Nissan. It showed how innovative Nissan technology continues to impress, whether on the commute to the office or in Antarctica! »– said Allison Witherspoon, vice president of global marketing, brands and merchandising of Nissan.
An adventure that began last March
This adventure, which lasted 10 months, started in March 2023 on the frozen Arctic Sea, at the magnetic North Pole in 1823. Chris and Julie then traveled the various roads and trails of North, Central and South America before crossing the farthest continent on the planet, which allowed them to reach the Earth’s South Pole. This is the first time that a car, and especially an electric car, has made such a trip.
To accompany them over such a long distance and over difficult terrain, the two adventurers could count on their 100% electric expedition vehicle: a Nissan Ariya equipped e-4orce all-wheel drive. The Japanese SUV perfectly passed this harsh experiment, overcoming extreme temperatures and high altitudes.
Chris and Julie have began planning this pole-to-pole adventure in 2017, after completing the Mongolia Rally driving his Nissan Leaf: the first time an electric car has been used in a 10,000 km event. Their ambition was to create a brand new electric adventure and they were committed to innovation together with several like-minded partners.
Nissan Ariya specially prepared for this event
The Nissan Ariya used for this expedition received some minor changes for the occasion, thanks to polar mobility specialists Arctic Trucks: the suspension was raised and the wheel arches widened, andHuge 39” BF Goodrich tires were installed to facilitate its passage over difficult terrain, be it snow, rough terrain or crossings.
Nissan clarifies that no changes have been made to the standard Ariya’s battery, electric motor or electric four-wheel drive e-4orce, which retain their original configuration. The two adventurers, however, brought along a trailer carrying a mobile installation for the production of renewable energyconsisting of a wind turbines and with solar panels folding. This system made it possible to take advantage of the cells to recharge the car battery during breaks on this long trip around the world.
