Tesla has received the necessary permits to begin construction of its new factory in Mexico. This is reported by the Milenio news agency, which has obtained official documents.
The country’s Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources said all the documents to obtain a final permit from the Mexican federal government are ready. Mexican Gigafactory, promised to become the largest in the worldshould come out of the ground soon.
Mexico is doing its best
Last week, Tesla purchased the land on which the factory will be built, a sign that things are moving in the right direction. However, it is not yet known when the construction of this new plant will begin. Work could begin within the next few weeks, according to several sources close to the matter.
Meanwhile, the state of Nuevo León is working on a new industrial district to support the Gigafactory. For this, roads and infrastructure are being built that will facilitate access to this Gigafactory.
According to Reuters, the local government said it plans to spend more than $130 million (about 120.5 million euros) on infrastructure to support the construction of what is already being called “Giga Mexico.”
Why are Tesla and Elon Musk holding back Mexico’s efforts?
If, on the one hand, the Mexican authorities seem to insist on the quick completion of the project, on the other hand, Elon Musk, contrary to his habit, seems to be showing some caution about the Mexican factory.
“In Mexico, we lay the groundwork to start construction and do all the work in the long term”he recently stated “but we want to have a better idea of where the world economy is going before we dive headfirst into the work”.
Tesla’s Mexican factory was announced last March, and has already been described as “The largest electric car factory in the world”, whose investment is estimated at approximately 5 billion euros. The factory is expected to focus on building models based on the brand’s next-generation platform, which is expected to underpin the upcoming Model 2 and robotaxi.
