New Tesla recall. The American manufacturer was recently forced to initiate a massive recall of nearly two million vehicles in the United States. This decision was made after a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that indicated the potential risk associated with the car’s assisted driving system.
In a letter to Tesla last Tuesday, NHTSA highlighted that the Assisted Driving feature of certain vehicles in the Tesla fleet could be subject to misuse, thereby increasing the risk of collision.
An investigation found that the design of the system likely caused it “inadequate driver involvement and usage control”potentially leading to misuse.
The autopilot charged again
The agency warns that if a driver uses the driver assistance incorrectly, under inappropriate conditions, or does not recognize whether the feature is activated, this may increase the risk of an accident. Tesla, for its part, acknowledged in its report that the current controls for its AutoPilot system “may not be sufficient to prevent misuse by the driver”.
This problem is not new for Tesla, as Autopilot has been involved in accidents in the past. In 2021, NHTSA initiated an evaluation to investigate 11 incidents involving stopped emergency response vehicles and Teslas equipped with driver assistance systems.
Which Teslas are affected?
Although Tesla did not agree with NHTSA’s analysis, the manufacturer made such a decision on December 5. to perform a mass recall to update the software.
Vehicles affected by this recall include certain models in the Tesla lineup, such as Model S produced between 2012 and 2023, all Model X produced between 2016 and 2023, all Model 3 produced between 2017 and 2023, and all Model Y produced from 2020 onwards..
