Launched in 1968 Toyota Hilux is one of the emblematic models of the Japanese manufacturer, with more than 21 million units sold worldwide. The eighth and current generation, unveiled in 2015, has not yet adopted electrification technologies, even if Toyota has already presented several prototypes equipped with an electric or hydrogen engine.
In a few months, the new 48 V hybrid diesel engine will appear in the catalog with the launch Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V : this already promises better performance while improving model efficiency.
Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V: diesel engine enhanced by hybridization
Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V is distinguished by its engine: turbocharged diesel unit 2.8 l with 16 valves develops 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torqueand was boosted by the addition of a 48V hybrid system.
A heat engine drives a compact electric motor-generator that can charge a Lithium battery 48 V, installed under the rear seats. This 48V battery weighing 7.6kg also powers the vehicle’s 12V system via a DC/DC converter.
In practice, the battery is charged automatically during movement by recovering the kinetic energy that is normally lost during the braking and deceleration phases. This system allows you to add up to 16 horsepower and 65 Nm of torque to the diesel engine to improve performance and efficiency.
The launch is planned for mid-2024 in Europe
In the city, this 48V hybrid system provides better acceleration, particularly when starting from a standstill after stopping at a red light, for example, and improves deceleration efficiency. Toyota is already announcing increase in energy efficiency up to 5%. compared to the same non-electrified diesel engine.
The Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V has also been developed for off-road use with a new system Multi-Terrain Select which allows you to select the driving mode depending on the conditions (earth, sand, mud, deep snow or stones). The 48V battery and its converter are also sealed so the car can cross fords and rivers up to 70cm deep.
Toyota Hilux Hybrid 48V, available only in double cab format, will be sold in Europe for mid 2024. Its prices for France, as well as the specifications, which are currently being approved, will be announced at a later date.
