His Skoda Octavia’s clutch fails at 107,900 km… News Auto Plus in your smartphone News Auto Plus in your inbox

It was at the beginning of the 2021 academic year that Louis-Michel Que, a loyal reader of La Source (45), decided to change the car. Looking for a spacious and economical model, this big wheeler directs its choice to a Skoda Octavia Combi 1.6 TDI 116 since 2019, put up for sale by a brand dealer.

Showing 32,200 km, this wagon benefits from a complete overhaul. Therefore, Louis-Michel believes that he has bought himself peace and quiet for several years.

But the latter are unlikely to be many, since only two years have passed since receiving the keys to his Skoda, and the counter shows 107,900 km is a breakdown…

Bad driver

The Octavia was then left at a local dealership, which quickly confirmed our reader’s opinion: the problem arose from clutch. But he considers this breakdown still premature, since, in addition to the mechanism, it is necessary to change the flywheel as well.

It is this last moment that attracts his attention. So he asks the workshop manager to make a cover request as the invoice is 3188 euros. But Skoda quickly and categorically refuses to put its hand in the wallet.

According to the manufacturer, this failure is the result of a “incorrect use of the gearbox”. A false pretext in the eyes of Louis-Michel, who has no intention of stopping there…

Our defense strategy

Louis-Michel is right to question Skoda’s findings. The use of a clutch mechanism with the help of a drive is really possible. But it is much less likely to destroy the flywheel.

Also in this matter, Skoda should apply the scale of our experts. This indicates longevity clutch is with 150,000 km and what with flywheel with 200,000 km.

Thus, the brand must reimburse its customer 30% of the first and 45% of the second.
