Mercedes opens a new page in its cooperation with the Lyon company Mob-Energyspecialist in energy storage and charging of electric vehicles.

This partnership makes it possible to optimize the life cycle of electric vehicle batteries by using them in additional applications such as stationary energy storage. This gives them a second life after the first use in an electric vehicle and before recycling. In fact, a lithium battery accounts for up to 60% of an EV’s carbon footprint, and reuse helps reduce that footprint.

Eiko: A storage solution using recycled batteries

This is how Mob-Energy was created Eiko’s Power Cube : is the solution for modular stationary storagemade of used batteries an original Mercedes, restored after being used in its first life in electric cars of the German brand. This solution helps meet the energy storage and charging needs of electric vehicles.

Since its development in 2022, the Eiko Power Cube has allowed Mob-Energy to give a second life to no less than 1 MW/h of used batteries. In practice, this solution makes installation very easy and fast charging stations for 10-20 electric carsthanks to a single low-power electrical cable and without difficult installation work.

During the first months, the Eiko systems supplied more than 40 MWh of energy for electric vehicles, giving them more than 200,000 km of autonomy. In addition to charging electric cars, Eiko also allows store electrical energy, to optimize the balancing of the use of the local electricity grid: for example, the system stores energy at night to allow its later reuse when demand is higher. Eiko also allows you to saveenergy from renewable sourcessuch as solar panels and other photovoltaic systems.

A full circle approach

Mob-Energy recently installed its Eiko solution at DHL Express in Creteil, Ile-de-France: 25% of the company’s vehicle fleet is equipped with electric motors, including around a hundred Mercedes Sprinters. This setup represents a full circle approach for the brand’s batteries: the batteries fitted to Mercedes cars when they left the factory were then regenerated in the Eiko system, which itself now powers the Mercedes eSprinter fleet.

The collaboration between Mercedes and Mob-Energy marks the commitment of both partners more environmentally friendly use of electric vehicle batteries. In addition to deploying the Eiko Power Cubes, the two companies are exploring new ways to reuse faulty or damaged Mercedes car batteries.
